A good name is better than great riches - Proverbs

(Me, my mom and Owen getting ready for his Bris)

Below is the explanation of Owen's name, given by his parents at his Brit Milah and Naming ceremony on Friday March 5, 2010

Today we are here to welcome and introduce Owen David into the Jewish community. We give him a Hebrew name and an English name. His English name signifies the bond between his maternal and paternal lineage but also the importance of his individuality. The Hebrew name brings him into the life of Judaism and ties him to four generations of Jews before him.

His English name, Owen, is the maiden name of his maternal grandmother and the middle name of his uncle and godfather, Dane Owen.

His Hebrew name is Nissan David.

Owen will share the Hebrew name, Nissan, with his father who was given the name Nissan at his own bris, after his paternal grandfather. This name will now span four generations of our family.

His middle name, David, is the common thread between his English and Hebrew names. David is the name of his paternal grandfather and just like the hero who triumphed over the mighty Goliath, our son -who almost arrived twelve weeks too soon- emerged from the womb with a strong shout even before the umbilical cord was cut. Proving the strength and determination of his small spirit.

May this be a name which brings honor to our people, joy to his family and fulfillment to himself. May he live and grow in health and happiness. As his parents, we dedicate ourselves to the creation of a Jewish home - a place of generosity, a place of compassion for others, a place of learning - in the hope that you will grow to cherish and carry on these ideals.

  1. beautiful! i love when names have a meaning/purpose and not just "oh we liked it in a baby book!" :-p

just curious - does his hebrew name appear in his legal name? or is it only for religious purposes?

  2. It's only for religious purposes, but we just love it.

We were joking that our first born was getting the best name(s) and now we have to come up with something meaningful for subsequent offspring :)

  4. I agree with Mrs. 2nd L. Your name choice was really cool. Both my kids have meaningful middle names. It's nice to build the family connection in without just slapping Jr. at the end of someone's name. Also, maybe you can give your 2nd kid a bigger bedroom to make up for his/her subpar name.
